Piano Care And Maintenance Tips

Buying a piano can be a huge investment and requires an owner to take proper care of this instrument to keep it sounding like new for years to come. Accumulation of dust, long-term- use and neglect can shorten the lifespan of this musical instrument. To gain maximum enjoyment from your piano, whether a digital piano, electronic keyboard or an acoustic piano, follow these simple piano care tips in this PianoForAll Review guide listed below.

Piano Care and Maintenance Tips

#1: Choose a suitable place to put your piano

One of the best places to keep your piano would be to place it against the wall, and away from moisture, sunlight and air currents. While exposure to sunlight can lead to cracks, fades and wraps on your piano finish or even create tuning problems, placing the instrument close to the windows, doors, or vents (air currents) can cause the keys, bridges, and soundboard of the piano to dry out, leading to create cracks in the instrument. Placing the piano in an area with excessive moisture can destroy the metal components (tuning pins, strings) causing corrosion, rust, and deterioration.

#2: Maintain the temperature and humidity levels inside the piano room

Pianos are constructed of wood (body), cast iron (frame) steel wires, felt and glue making them vulnerable to extreme temperatures and high humidly. Due to the fluctuations in temperatures and humidity levels, parts of the piano swell and shrink, leading to their damage. To prevent the damage, it is important that you maintain the temperature and humidity levels year round. Maintaining a temperature around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 50 percent humidity level inside the piano room is essential to keep the instrument safe. Using a humidifier in winter and dehumidifier in summer and spring can help maintain the humidity levels in the room

#3: Tune the piano regularly

Due to swelling and contraction of a piano's switchboard, the pitch of this instrument falls every year. Playing piano that is out- of -- tune increases the risk of wear on the instrument. To tune a piano, the tension of the 200 plus strings of the instrument has to be adjusted so that the notes play in a proper pitch. Most piano manufacturers suggest doing four initial tunings during the first year and two times a year thereafter by a professional technician.

#4: Cleaning and maintaining piano exterior

To keep the surface of your piano clean, first, wipe the dust from the surface of the piano using a clean dusting cloth or a feather duster. Then, using a damp cotton cloth wipes the instrument in the direction of the grain. Remove excess moisture using a dry cloth. For cleaning the keys, use a small amount of denatured alcohol on a damp cloth. However, ensure that you use separate cloths for the whites and blacks. Avoid having any liquid running down the keys. Do not use furniture polish or cleaning agents to clean the piano. Additionally, cover the keys when not in use and keep your piano away from liquids, food spills, fish bowls, flower vases and silicon furniture polish.

#5: Play your piano regularly

Playing the piano regularly will not only help you receive more enjoyment from it but will help you notice problems that might escalate to more permanent ones if not serviced quickly. Additionally, practicing regularly will also help you reach your musical potential more quickly with regular practice.

Following these easy-care practices listed above will not only help keep your piano look good and sound better over the years, but also enhance your piano playing skills and improve your overall health.
